Discover a treasure of the Discover a treasure of the Hamilton Library’s Special Collections at UH M

Look at and learn about Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond D’Alembert’s Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers.

This encyclopedia, published by French philosophers Denis Diderot and Jean D’Alembert during the second half of the Enlightenment (1751-1772), embodies an amazing synthesis of knowledge. Its contributors sought to change the way the public thought about science, religion, art, and industry.

If you would like to see and touch real books from the eighteenth century, learn about how these books were made and published, and discuss the philosophy of the French Enlightenment, please join us!
